Prevent drowning
Did you know?
a baby or young child can drown in as little as 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) of water in just a few seconds.
most drownings to babies happen in the bathtub.
back yard pools are a high risk for toddler drownings.
Fact
drowning is one of the leading causes of preventable death for Canadian children under the age of fourteen.
You can prevent drowning
by making sure children are actively supervised by a responsible adult and within arm's reach when they are in, on or around the water.
by always staying right beside your child when they are in the bathtub; if you have to leave, take your child with you.
by emptying water from wading pools, buckets and baths immediately after use.
by making sure weak or non swimmers always wear a life jacket or personal floatation device.
by taking a First Aid and CPR course.
by being aware that infant bath rings and bath seats are not safe; your baby could slip into the water.
by making sure that backyard pools have a fence around them on all four sides; at least 1.2 metres (4 feet) tall and have self-closing and self-locking gates.
