Prevent drowning

Did you know?

  • a baby or young child can drown in as little as 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) of water in just a few seconds.
  • most drownings to babies happen in the bathtub.
  • back yard pools are a high risk for toddler drownings.

Fact

  • drowning is one of the leading causes of preventable death for Canadian children under the age of fourteen.

You can prevent drowning

  • by making sure children are actively supervised by a responsible adult and within arm's reach when they are in, on or around the water.
  • by always staying right beside your child when they are in the bathtub; if you have to leave, take your child with you.
  • by emptying water from wading pools, buckets and baths immediately after use.
  • by making sure weak or non swimmers always wear a life jacket or personal floatation device.
  • by taking a First Aid and CPR course.
  • by being aware that infant bath rings and bath seats are not safe; your baby could slip into the water.
  • by making sure that backyard pools have a fence around them on all four sides; at least 1.2 metres (4 feet) tall and have self-closing and self-locking gates.
