Safety for pre-schoolers

Did you know?

  • Children imitate adult behaviour. Set a safe example when crossing streets by using cross walks and obeying traffic signals.
You can prevent the major causes of injury.

In the car

  • children over 40 pounds and under 4 feet; 9 inches tall are required by law to ride in a booster seat until their 9th birthday.

  • do not permit behaviour which distracts the driver -- stop the car when children fight, throw things, or move around the car

On a tricycle

  • use a properly fitted bicycle helmet to protect your child from head injuries -- introducing a helmet now will make it easier to continue this important safety habit

At the playground

  • avoid clothing with ties or draw-strings which could cause strangling
  • ensure that the playground surface is soft enough to absorb impact in a fall -- wood mulch, wood chips or sand are better than concrete, hard-packed soil or grass

Around the house

  • ensure that all craft supplies are non-toxic
