About 200 cases of "hamburger disease" were identified in BC last year. This disease can lead to internal bleeding, kidney failure or even death. Some patients have needed kidney transplants.
You can prevent "hamburger disease"
refrigerate or freeze meat as soon as possible after buying
thaw meat in the refrigerator, not at room temperature
wash hands well before preparing or touching food
wash cooking tools, cutting boards, serving platters and counters with diluted bleach
cook all ground meat thoroughly until no pink remains
You can prevent tick bites
use light-coloured clothing and tuck pants into socks or boots
walk on clear trails, not through tall grass
check clothes and scalp for ticks after leaving areas where ticks may live
You can prevent sunburn
keep babies under six months out of the direct sun
limit exposure of older children, especially between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
