Injuries can happen when strollers tip over while children are riding in them. Avoid placing shopping and diaper bags on stroller handles. When buying a stroller new or second-hand, look for one that has a five-point harness and built-in storage on the underside of the frame.

Wait until your baby is at least three months of age before using a jogger stroller. If you plan to buy a jogger for use with a young baby, make sure the stroller has a full recline feature. Otherwise, it will not provide enough support for a newborn's weak neck and heavy head.

Use a head hugger or rolled-up towel to support your baby's head on either side. Avoid taking babies less than one year of age on rough terrain like dirt/gravel paths and hiking trails. This also puts undue strain on undeveloped neck muscles.

If you are a serious runner, take your jogger for a test run before buying and make sure there is enough clearance between the fully-reclined seat and your legs when in full stride.

Child Safety Seats

A baby should always travel in a rear-facing car seat until at least one year of age. Otherwise, in a frontal collision, a baby’s heavy head may be thrown forward with enough force to cause paralysis or death. In the rear-facing position, an infant’s whole body – head, neck and spine – is cradled by the back of the car seat.

At about one year, the bones start to harden, and the baby gradually becomes less vulnerable. By 9 months, most infants will outgrow the typical infant-only car seat in weight (9-10 kg or 20-22 lb.) or length (if their head is within an inch of the top edge of the car seat shell). At this point they will need to move into a larger convertible (or toddler) seat that is more appropriate for their weight and length. Many convertible car seats can be used rear-facing up to 14-16 kg (30-35 lb.), depending on the model and manufacturer, so there is no reason to turn an infant forward-facing until at least one year of age. A best practice would be to keep children rear-facing beyond 1 year until they reach the seat's maximum rear-facing weight limit.

Toddlers between the ages of approximately 1 - 4 ½ years of age can ride forward-facing in a convertible car seat until 18 kg (40 lb.). Taller children may need a combination harness/booster seat. The harness straps of some combination harness/booster seats can be used up to 18-22 kg (40-48 lb).

Children who have out-grown their forward-facing car seat, generally 4 ½ years of age, need to use a booster seat. It is now the law in BC that children under 4 feet 9 inches tall need to ride in a booster seat until their 9th birthday.

Safety Tips

  1. Always buckle your child into an CMVSS approved infant, toddler or booster seat. For more information, visit www.childseatinfo.ca
  2. Warning!! NEVER let children put shoulder belts under their arms while buckled in. An improperly placed shoulder belt can cause liver, spine and kidney damage in a collision.
  3. Never put a child under 12 years of age in the front seat of an airbag-equipped car.
  4. Always use the safety harnesses provided with grocery shopping carts. Like strollers, shopping carts can tip over ifchild stands up in it.
  5. Put a barrier at the end of your driveway to prevent children from riding out into street traffic. Driveway ride-out is a leading cause of collisions between children and motorists.
