FundingIn July 2005, Drs. Jean Pierre Chanoine and Sue Stock were awarded a competitive grant from the Provincial Health Services Authority to expand implementation of the Healthy Buddies™ program and to conduct limited program evaluation in schools across the province. Funds were awarded from a PHSA Agency supported aggregate dedicated to innovation in community-level health promotion and chronic disease prevention. Roll outIn January 2006, David Barnum & Valerie Ryden contacted school Superintendents all over British Columbia to introduce the program and invite support. In February and March 2005, hundreds of B.C. public elementary schools were sent information packages and a Healthy Buddies™ program overview DVD. All schools were invited to voluntarily sign-up to receive the Healthy Buddies™ program in the 2006/2007 or 2007/2008 school year. MandateThe Provincial Health Services Authority Prevention, Promotion, Protection grant allows for forty schools to receive the resource, free of charge, between the 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 scholastic years. The grant and team's emphasis is for implementation in public schools throughout the province of B.C. and beyond. Delivery! We are pleased to announce forty-six elementary schools received the Healthy Buddies™ program between Fall 2006 and Spring 2008. The schools represent all five geographical health regions in British Columbia, in urban and rural settings, with large (>700) and small student populations (<100), of French immersion and Russian immersion, with predominantly caucasian student populations as well as diversely ethnic schools with high ESL populations (>65%). We are pleased too that some of these schools are First Nations Band schools. See the Healthy Buddies™ Recruitment Chart below for more information. (top)
