Shaken Baby Syndrome

Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) or Abusive Head Trauma (AHT) is the name given to the collection of signs and symptoms resulting from violently shaking an infant or a young child, with or without impact to the head.

Prevent SBS British Columbia, a new program of BC Children’s Hospital, is beginning a provincial prevention initiative aimed at reducing the number of SBS cases in B.C.

Decades of research have shown that infant crying, especially inconsolable crying, is the main trigger for Shaken Baby Syndrome. Our prevention program, The Period of PURPLE Crying®, is intended to educate the parents and general public about the frustrating characteristics of normal infant crying, especially inconsolable crying, and the dangers of shaking.

In addition, we are an information and resource network for professionals, parents, caregivers, and the general public who are interested in obtaining a better understanding of this preventable form of child abuse.
