Annual Influenza Surveillance
Every year the Vaccine Evaluation Centre is called upon to assess the common side-effects of, and immune responses to, influenza vaccination.
In addition to assessment of the routine Influenza vaccine, this study is part of the Pandemic Influenza preparedness plan in Canada. It is dually funded by the Public Health Association of Canada (PHAC) and the PHAC/CIHR Influenza Research Network (PCIRN). To facilitate a quick assessment programme for a new Influenza vaccine at the time of a pandemic, the VEC recruits a standing pool of subjects who are called upon each year. Every year the surveillance involves a visit to receive the vaccine, and then a tool to aid the collection of safety data afterwards. It will also involve blood collection before and after vaccination. These activities occur prior to the publically funded programme for Influenza vaccine in BC.
Having a pool of willing volunteers to call upon annually is an incredibly beneficial tool in annual surveillance and pandemic preparedness.
