What we do

Due to the high prevalence of mood and anxiety disorders in the population, and the preferance for children and families to receive treatment in their own communities, the clinic’s priority is given to consultation on complicated cases with psychiatrists, mental health teams, other hospital clinics and inpatient units across the province. Therefore many referred patients are redirected to their local community for assessment.

If indicated, the clinic will provide short-term treatment until community resources can take over. Some complex cases may receive ongoing care or repeated consultation in the clinic. Children and adolescents with an uncomplicated mood or anxiety disorder may receive assessment or treatment as part of the clinic's teaching program or a research program.

Treatment options:
  • Pharmacotherapy consulting is a specific expertise of the clinic.
  • We use cognitive behavioral therapy delivered in groups on anxiety management with children and parents based on the book Taming Worry Dragons.
  • Individual psychotherapy is offered on a limited basis and is usually part of the teaching program, as the clinic has a training centre for psychiatric residents, psychology interns, and social workers. Interpersonal therapy for adolescents with depression is being developed as a provincial area of expertise.
  • There are supportive and specific therapy groups for younger and older adolescents with a mood disorder.
