For professionals

Referrals

Appropriate referrals are for youth, 12-24 years of age, who have substance misuse, abuse, or dependency and who may also have co-occurring mild to moderate mental illness. We will also provide consultation to persons with a severe eating disorder or significant psychosis, through the Eating Disorders Clinic or the Early Psychosis Intervention (EPI) Program respectively. We are an outpatient clinic with a waiting list, so we do not provide emergency or urgent care.

Ideal referrals would be:
  • Adolescents who have abstained for at least one week, as an accurate psychiatric evaluation is impossible in the face of active drug use.
  • Adolescents who are willing to connect with drug and alcohol resources in their community. As we are a consultation clinic only, it is important that the patient have (or arrange for) a GP or community counselor who would provide the primary drug and alcohol therapy.
  • Adolescents who are assessed during a crisis (i.e. Emergency Room) should initiate the referral through a family doctor or walk-in community clinic, indicating a level of commitment to follow through with the consultation process.

These criteria are designed to providing the maximum benefit to this under-served patient population. Given our limited resources, please make every effort to meet the above conditions prior to making a referral. We are aware that this may be difficult at times given the unpredictable nature of addictive behavior.

All referrals to the Youth Substance Use Disorders Clinic must be made in writing. You can download a referral form or request one by calling 604-875-2010. Completed referral forms should be faxed to 604-875-2099.

Teaching

We provide teaching to medical students, family practice, pediatric, and psychiatry residents on the diagnosis and treatment of substance use disorders, psychiatric disorders, and co-occurring substance and mental health disorders. Teaching is also provided for nurses, social workers, and therapists.

Research

The clinic team has initiated and collaborated on research in several areas of substance use and psychiatric disorders.
