Provincial Youth Concurrent Disorders Program
The Provincial Youth Concurrent Disorders Program provides outpatient psychiatric consultations for BC youth (ages 12-24). The clinic offers specialized services for the complex needs of youth with substance use disorders, and conditions involving both substance abuse and mental disorders at the same time. A referral from a physician is required.
Youth substance abuse is a serious problem that requires a unique approach, taking into account the negative impact of substances on brain development, the binge pattern of use, and increased involvement in high-risk behaviors such as unsafe driving, physical fights, and unsafe sex.
If there is a dual diagnosis where the youth has both a substance use problem and a mental health disorder at the same time, the situation is much more complex and calls for a specific management approach. The substance abuse and mental health problems overlap significantly and can affect each other’s development and prognosis. These combined disorders increase the risk of misdiagnosis and treatment delay, and can result in the inefficient use of health care services.
