What we do

Referrals from Health Care Professionals

Referrals from the community are accepted from general practitioners, pediatricians, other specialty physicians, health care professionals, the Ministry for Children and Families, and mental health centres. All requests for assessment and/or consultation must include a medical referral.

Assessments

Assessments can generally be done within one to two weeks. If the presenting problems are so acute that an immediate assessment is required (i.e., the patient needs to be assessed that day), the referring person, patient and/or family will be re-directed to the emergency room of their local hospital.

Followup

After the assessment, telephone contact with the referring physician about medication options and follow-up care is usually done immediately. Written copies of the assessment, including treatment recommendations, will then be sent to the patient and/or family and to the referring physician or agency as appropriate. These reports are usually mailed within two to three weeks of the assessment. Referrals for ongoing community treatment are discussed with the patient and/or family and initiated by the clinic staff.
