Children's Hospital

BC Children’s Heart Centre offers outpatient cardiology and cardiac surgery patient care. Care is provided to infants and children with a variety of cardiac conditions including asymptomatic murmurs, established heart disease or associated cardiac conditions. A multidisciplinary team provides care to patients and families. The centre plays an active role in educating and training student nurses, allied health professionals, and physicians. The Children’s Heart Centre team works with other teams and programs within the hospital to provide cardiac care to children and adolescents including:
  • a 22-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit including an eight-bed Transitional Care Unit
  • a 48-bed Special Care Nursery
  • a 28-bed Inpatient Unit
Children's Heart Centre is a pleasant and convenient place for outpatient assessments and inpatient testing. The facility is equipped with separate rooms for pre-echocardiogram sedation, patient visits, and family and youth education. There are more than 7,000 patient visits, 5,000 echocardiograms, and 4,500 electrocardiograph studies annually. Children’s Heart Centre is also equipped with telehealth facilities, a pacemaker clinic, and exercise lab. There is also a state-of-the-art echocardiography lab at the centre.

Regular meetings and educational events occur in the conference room including regular telehealth links with the Western Canadian Children’s Heart Network.

Patient referrals from family physicians or pediatricians can be faxed to Children’s Heart Centre with patient demographics, reason for referral, and any relevant background information. All referrals are organized by priority by the cardiologist and arrangements made accordingly.

Each month, a pediatric cardiology clinic is conducted at Surrey Memorial Hospital. Referrals for elective cardiology assessment can be made to The Child and Youth Clinics at Surrey Memorial Hospital.
