Growing Up With Heart Disease Conference: Celebrating The Young At Heart
May 28-29, 2005
The fifth Growing Up With Heart Disease Conference was held on May 28-29 of this year at the Chan Centre for Family Health Education in Vancouver, BC. This conference, jointly organized every two years by the Cardiac Sciences Program of BC Children’s Hospital and Children’s Heart Network, has met with tremendous success since its inception in 1997. It provides an excellent opportunity for parents, youth and professionals to learn and share exciting and current developments, trends and research in the care of children and youth with congenital heart disease. The 2001 conference was recognized with an Award of Excellence For Patient and Family Education by BC’s Children’s Hospital.
The theme for this year’s conference was “Celebrating the Young at Heart” and there were several exciting speakers including Dr. Jay Fricker, a world expert on pediatric cardiac transplantation from the University of Florida, Gainesville. Mary Canobbio, a well known and respected Clinical Nurse Specialist and researcher from the UCLA Adult Congenital Heart Disease Center spoke on issues specific to adolescents and adults living with congenital heart disease. Plenary speakers, concurrent sessions and workshops addressed such relevant and diverse topics as developmental issues for children with CHD, sexual health concerns for youth and young adults living with CHD, and current research and developments in pediatric transplantation.
This year the conference planning team worked in partnership with the Canadian Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndromes (SADS) Foundation that provided specific sessions for families and youth on the management of arrhythmias. These sessions provided opportunities for individuals living with cardiac arrhythmias and families who have experienced a sudden unexplained death of a young person to take aim at living with these life-altering events. Dr Shubhayan Sanatani, Pediatric Electrophysiologist from BC Children’s Hospital, Dr Laura Arbour, Clinical Geneticist from BC Children’s Hospital and Women’s Health Centre and Dr Susan Etheridge, Pediatric Electrophysiologist from Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah shared their knowledge and expertise in these sessions.
