Electromyography (EMG) & Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)
The test
You can print the pamphlet about the
Electromyography & Nerve Conduction Studies (PDF)
or look at our
NCS/EMG Book (PDF).
Electromyography (EMG) is a test which records the electrical response of specific muscles.
Nerve conduction studies (NCS) are tests which record how fast messages travel along the nerves in the arms and legs.
Preparation for an electromyogram (EMG) / nerve conduction study
Both tests are usually done together with the NCS being done first.
Most children are sedated for this test as it is very important for them to lie still -- see
Preparation for Being Sedated
.
Sleep deprivation is not necessary for these tests.
