Diagnostic Neurophysiology (EEG / EMG)

The BC Children's Hospital Diagnostic Neurophysiology Department performs over 25 procedures that test the brains, nerves, and muscles of children.

  • We are commonly called the EEG Department because the most common test is an EEG.
    • Electrodes are placed on the scalp to record brain activity which is viewed on a computer.
    • This record of brain activity is called an electroencephalogram (or EEG).
    • All children are digitally videotaped during their EEG to correlate questionable episodes or behaviour(s) with brain activity.
  • Each test ordered can help in your child's diagnosis.
  • We work very closely with Neurology, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics and Neuropsychology.
  • We provide services and go to all wards, ICU, NICU, Emergency and on occasion BC Women's Hospital.
  • We provide services for the whole province.

Types of Tests:

  1. Electroencephalography--> EEG
  2. Ambulatory Monitoring -->AM

  5. Visual Evoked Potential -->VEP
