For professionals

The Respiratory Therapy department is involved in several training activities:
  • Affiliated with the Thompson Rivers University respiratory therapy student training program
  • Anesthesia Assistant training program
  • Advanced neonatal training program
  • Clinical update workshops for respiratory therapists
  • Clinical skills teaching to other disciplines
  • Patient and parent teaching (i.e., CPR, airway management, home ventilator management)
  • Extracorporeal Life Support Program (ECLS) Specialist training. Respiratory therapists and critical care nurses receive training and are certified to care for patients receiving extended heart or lung bypass support in the Intensive Care Unit.
  • Anesthesia assistant program has recently been initiated to provide clinical assistance to Anesthesiology and to perform advanced skills such as intubation and IV an arterial line insertion.
  • The pulmonary function lab participates in setting provincial regulatory standards and developing new testing procedures for children. In addition, Children's is a diagnostic reference site for equipment and procedures.
  • Development of an advanced level neonatal training program.
