New patients
This is to help you as a parent or guardian of a child suspected of, or diagnosed with, cancer.
Your child should be referred immediately to a children’s cancer specialist at BC Children’s Hospital.
Usually this will involve an initial admission to the specialized ward although sometimes an outpatient visit will suffice.
You will meet the specialist on call who will address your concerns and explain the plan of action.
If necessary, a
social worker
will assist you with finding accommodations and with other financial issues.
The
BC Cancer Agency
also provides a booklet called
Financial Information for Cancer Patients
that has information you may find useful.
We recognize that as a parent or guardian, you are an essential member of the team treating your child.
We welcome the opportunity to work with you in achieving the best possible outcome.
For more information about your visit, please see the
Your Visit
section of this website.
For more information on family support, please refer to the
BC Childhood Cancer Parents Association
website.
For help to talk to your child about cancer, visit the
Canadian Cancer Society
