Health care team
A significant contribution to the successful treatment of children with cancer and blood disorders comes from adopting a team approach to patient care.
The team includes doctors specializing in childhood cancer and blood disorders, nurses with expertise in the field, pharmacists, nutritionists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, social workers, child life specialists, patient and parent advocate, clinical research assistants, the family physician and pediatrician, parents and the patient.
One of our pediatric oncologist/hematologist is the main physician responsible for directing the care of the patient. This physician and his or her primary nurse forms the primary care team at BC Children's and liaises with the local community doctors and nurses. Additional physicians (clinical associates), who are experienced in oncology/hematology care, are also part of the team.
Since the pediatric oncologists/hematologists are organized as a group practice, other pediatric oncologists/hematologists at Children's will be involved in the patient's care from time to time.
Pediatric Oncology Fellows are qualified pediatricians undertaking further training in cancer treatment. These Fellows supervise the day-to-day inpatient care (the inpatient team on 3B) and are assisted by other physicians and nurses.
