Programs & services

The BC Children’s Hospital Division of Oncology, Hematology and Blood & Marrow Transplantation (BMT) program provides comprehensive care for children (under age 17 years) with cancer and complex hematological disorders. This includes both inpatient and outpatient care.  Care for newly diagnosed patients older than 17 years is provided through the BC Cancer Agency.  The health care team provides an innovative and proactive program with strategies that support and involve families in the care and treatment of their child.

The division is a member of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG). This cooperative group of prominent children’s hospitals in North America is a leading organization in the diagnosis and treatment of childhood cancer. Children’s cancer specialists are in constant communication with centers all over the world and are able to decide the best possible treatment for any childhood cancer.

Children’s has a separate ward with 17 beds for pediatric oncology patients, including a five-bed hematopoietic stem cell transplant unit. The pediatric oncology outpatient clinic is staffed by specially trained nurses and physicians. There is a full complement of pediatric specialists (including pediatric surgeons, neurosurgeons, other subspecialty surgeons, radiation oncologists, pathologists, diagnostic imagers) and a specialized multidisciplinary team to provide appropriate care. After initial evaluation and treatment, many patients can be treated in their local community by a local pediatrician under the supervision of a pediatric oncologist at Children's.
