Advanced Symptom & Palliative Care

The Advanced Symptom and Palliative Care Service assists children and families who are living with progressive, life-threatening diseases and the health care professionals caring for them. Life threatening diseases are those conditions that may or may not have a possibility for cure, but where survival until full adulthood is a serious challenge. These children often require advanced symptom management.

What we do

The Advanced Symptom and Palliative Care Service provides:

  • Inpatient and telephone consultation
  • Outpatient follow up care at Madison Clinic
  • Assessment and management of symptoms associated with life-threatening diseases
  • Education and support for parents and/or health care providers
  • Information about symptoms, trajectory, and advanced directives
  • Coordination with other healthcare professionals at BCCH, Canuck Place, and other programs

There is no requirement that families be part of the Canuck Place program.

Health care team

The Advanced Symptom and Palliative Care Service consists of physicians and nurses with advanced skills in symptom management. They are all members of the Canuck Place team and BC Children’s Hospital & Sunny Hill Health Centre.
