For families

Booking an appointment

Once a completed referral is received, the Asthma Education Clinic will contact the family by phone to arrange an initial appointment. Clinic visits last about one hour.

We will make every attempt to contact you within 48-72 hours of receiving the referral. When we reach you, we will try to book an appointment that will best suit you and your child’s schedule. If you need to reschedule an appointment, please phone the clinic at the earliest time possible so that a more suitable date and time can be booked.

Language support

Families who have English as a second language are able to access an interpreter for each education session.  This service is provided at no cost to the family.  The asthma educator will make the arrangements with Provincial Language Services prior to the child’s scheduled visit.  On request the interpreter can contact the family to confirm the date, time and expectations for the visit.

American Sign Language service is available upon request.

What to bring to every appointment

Your child and any caregiver that is responsible for your child’s asthma management must attend the appointment.

  • Your child’s BC Children’s Hospital card (blue)
  • Your child’s asthma medications (even if currently not on any medication)
  • Asthma devices (e.g. spacer (aerochamber) or peak flow meter
  • Asthma symptom diary or journal
  • Your child’s asthma action plan (personalized medication plan) developed by you and your doctor.
  • Any questions and concerns you have about your child’s asthma.
