What we do

The Biochemical Diseases Clinic (BD Clinic) provides medical care using the best clinical evidence and research. Currently 396 patients are in continuous medical care in the Clinic. More than 50% have extremely rare diseases and almost every single patient requires highly sophisticated treatments and follow-up protocols.

Ongoing developments

1.       Expanded newborn screening; The availability of new methods of screening has become possible to screen for over 30 treatable metabolic diseases.

2.       Increasing availability of new treatment strategies: In the last few years, several new treatment strategies have become available for patients with previously untreatable metabolic conditions. These treatments may be extremely expensive and require careful monitoring to assess their clinical response and long-term outcomes.

3.       No successful treatment without patient involvement and commitment: One of the most important influences on the treatment outcome is the compliance of parents and the affected child. As a team, we are committed to helping families and children to comply with the most effective treatments available to them.
