Insulin Dose Adjustment: An Online Education Program for Parents of Children with Diabetes

The Endocrinology & Diabetes Unit has made available its updated online insulin dose adjustment self-learning program for parents of children with diabetes.

We are currently developing modules dealing with carbohydrate counting, multiple-dose insulin regimens, and insulin pumps. Please e-mail us with your comments and suggestions about this program.

This program is for parents of children with type 1 diabetes who:

  • Have a basic understanding of type 1 diabetes and
  • Would like to gain knowledge, skill and confidence to make insulin adjustments

Computer requirements:

When you have finished the learning modules, you will be able to:

  • State age appropriate blood sugar goals
  • Interpret blood sugar readings
  • Explain how different insulins work
  • Identify when an insulin adjustment is needed
  • Apply the guidelines for insulin adjustment
  • Adjust insulin for high or low blood sugars
  • Adjust insulin for activity
  • Adjust insulin for illness
  • Identify when to call for help
