Gastroenterology Clinic

Gastroenterology serves patients with these major diseases and conditions:

  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Liver and intestine transplantation
  • GI bleeding and foreign body ingestion
  • Severe protracted abdominal pain
  • General gastroenterology, including complex digestion and nutrition-related conditions

We see outpatients in 7 half-day clinics per week. We also provide other outpatient care at the Medical Day Care Unit for semi-urgent cases and infusion therapy. In 2004/05 there were 2,274 outpatient clinic visits and 39% were new patients.

Gastroenterology is involved in teaching MD undergraduate students, including problem-based learning and clinical skills sessions. It participates in OSCE and makes topical presentations. The division is active in pediatric residency training and lectures as well as elective rotations. It has an accredited program with four subspecialty residents.

Physicians are active in both basic and clinical research. We currently hold four major research grants as well as the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and the Canada Research Chairs Program.
