Chronic kidney disease
The BC Children’s Renal Program is the referral center for BC and Yukon children with kidney problems. In addition to the transplant and dialysis services, the program offers dedicated outpatient and inpatient services for children who have kidney disorders that may progressively worsen in time and eventually result in the need for dialysis care and kidney transplantation.
This unique group of children often has medical issues and complications of their kidney disease requiring specialized, intensive, and multidisciplinary care. For that reason, a specialty clinic for children with chronic kidney disease has been established at Children’s. This clinic often serves as a bridge and transition to dialysis and transplantation care, as well as an environment to foster self-care and preparation for transfer to adult programs when appropriate.
