Transplants
BC has a more than 30-year history of kidney transplants in children. The optimal treatment for a child with kidney failure is a kidney transplant, with dialysis providing a bridge until a kidney becomes available.
Kidney transplantation is a component of the full-service care provided by the Renal Program and supported by the BC Transplant Society. A major threat to the success of all kidney transplant services throughout the world is a worsening shortage of kidney donors. In the case of a child requiring a kidney transplant, every effort is made to identify a living related donor.
