The Youth Health Clinic is both youth-friendly and family-centered. This means that while we respect the confidentiality and growing independence of our teens, we also value very highly the role of family. We consider family to include everyone in a teen’s support group: parents, caregivers, guardians, siblings, friends and boyfriends or girlfriends. When possible, we like to meet with this support group as well as with our teens.
Parent and Patient Access to Health Records
Patients have a right to access their own health care information. A teen's health record is confidential and only they can give permission for others to look at their hospital record. When patients or their legal guardians wish to review their health record while admitted to hospital, BC Children's will make every reasonable effort to assist them in doing so. For more information, talk to your doctor or nurse.
Resources for families
The Family Resource Library at BC Children's Hospital has information about health and development for children and youth. Their web site is an excellent resource for information about the hospital, family support services and books.
The Family Care Book is for children and youth with complex medical and physical needs. It helps young people and their families understand their current situation and to prepare for adult care and adulthood. The book asks four questions:
- What are your daily health care needs?
- What is your health history?
- When and how do you start planning for adult living?
- And, where can you find the answers and resources?
