Health Care Team 

Who's Who in the hospital, and what do they do ? 
 
The Youth Health Team and Other professionals in the hospital.

Youth Health Team

Our team is committed and interested in your health. We are changing constantly to meet your needs. We want your ideas and feedback to make sure we are helping you. There are several people on our team and we work with other adolescent specialists in the hospital as well. These are the main members of our team:

Sabrina Gill - Nurse Clinician 604-875-2345 Local 6801
I work with families and the professionals at the hospital to make sure we are using the best means possible when caring for your needs now, and as you move through your life to adulthood. I will encourage you to take an active role in your own care and to assist with issues when they arise.
 
Peiyoong Lam - Adolescent Medical Specialist 604-875-2970
I am the Pediatric consultant to the healthcare team. I will work with you and your family. I will provide support to help you grow personally and socially. I will help you make the transition to the adult health care system. And I will assist you to find ways to stick with your medical treatments.
 
Curren Warf - Medical Director 604-875-2345
I am the medical director and the Division Head for Adolescent Medicine. My job is to coordinate the youth health services and make sure we maintain high standards for your care. I also teach medical residents and other health professionals wanting to learn about providing care you teenagers.

Tara Crawford - Program Secretary 604-875-3472 and Fax 604-875-2388
I am the secretary. I answer the phone, help you make appointments and find members of our team.

Other professionals:
 
Pediatrician (Dr): A pediatrician is a specialist who cares for children and youth up to 18 years of age. Usually as you reach adulthood, you will need to transfer your care to a family doctor or adult specialist.
 
Family Doctor (Dr): A family doctor is someone who usually lives in your community and cares for your general health, including diet, exercise, skin conditions, and sexual health concerns.
 
Specialist (Dr): A specialist Is a doctor with extra training in a specific body system/organ (heart, kidney, skin) or disease (cystic fibrosis, diabetes).
 
Child Life Specialist: Diedre is the Child Life Specialist dedicated to working with the youth at the hospital.  She can help you find ways to cope with your condition and try to make it easier to be in the hospital. She can also help you talk to you health care team and go with you to procedures.

Psychologist/Psychiatrist (Dr): A psychologist has special training to help you learn ways to cope with your health condition, to talk about your questions and concerns, and to manage the symptoms of your illness or condition.
 
Resident (Dr): A doctor learning how to be a pediatrician. Often this is the person you see the most and who takes care of you while you are at the hospital.
 
Staff Nurse (RN): A staff nurse is there to care for you 24 hours a day. You will have a nurse assigned to you each twelve hour shift for all your physical and emotional needs.
 
Social Worker (SW): A social worker helps you and your family find out what will help you cope with your condition. S/he suggests financial and other services In your home community. S/he can put you in touch with other youth dealing with a similar health condition, schools, camps, and support groups in your area.

Physiotherapist (PT): A physiotherapist checks on the strength and flexibility of your bones and muscles as well as breathing. S/he teaches you exercises to keep your body fit.
 
Occupational Therapist (OT): An occupational therapist can teach you skills to make your life and work manageable. S/he helps youth who have had an injury or surgery that makes it difficult for them to eat, move or do things.
 
Dietician (Nutritionist): A dietitian helps you plan a diet that meets your unique health and personal needs.
 
Charge Nurse (CNC): A charge nurse or clinical nurse coordinator is responsible for the staff, patients and families on a certain unit. He/she makes sure all your case needs are met and helps plan your discharge from the hospital.
 
Youth Advocate: A youth who will visit you while in hospital to listen, hear what you have to say, and encourage you to speak up!
 
Students: We are a teaching hospital for UBC and the University of Victoria. Sometimes medical and nursing students and other health care professionals come to appointments with our clinic team to learn about more about youth and their health issues and concerns. If you do not want these students during your visit, please let us know and we will respect your wishes.
