Visiting an Inpatient

Garden with waterfall behind Sunny Hill Visiting hours at Sunny Hill are from 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. daily. You will need to check in at the Nursing Station before your visit.

The doors at Sunny Hill are locked at 6:00 p.m. on weekdays and all weekend. To enter the building, ring the doorbell at the East 21st Avenue entrance.

During the day, children attend our school program, therapy sessions and/or recreational programs. For more information, talk to your child’s nurse, teacher or therapist, or read our pamphlet about inpatient visits.

Parents and families can also use “Family Place” (Room S295). Family Place has:
  • A small play area for children
  • A lounge where parents can take a break or make coffee
  • A family resource area where you can find pamphlets and videos about diseases, conditions and parenting. To use the videos and articles in the glass cupboard, please get the key from Social Work. For more information, you may want to visit our on-site resource centre, SHERC.

During the day, Family Place is used by many parents and children who come to Sunny Hill for outpatient visits.

Telephone Use

For local calls, you may use phones in:

  • Family Place (room S295)
  • Parent Lounge (room S227)
  • Patient rooms (when available)

For long distance calls, please use the pay phones in the main entrances to the building. You may use cellphones in Sunny Hill because they do not interfere with our equipment. Please use cellphones away from the inpatient ward to avoid disturbing our children and families on the ward.

Entertainment

The children in each room share the TVs. Many of the children have favourite TV or video programs. Please help us make sure the programs in the children’s rooms are suitable for children. If you would like to watch an adult show, TVs are available in the Parent Lounge or Family Place. We do not have rental TVs.

The TVs in the rooms can also be used to watch videos and DVDs or to play videogames. Bring your child's favourites, if you like. Be sure to put your child's name on the box.
