Acute Rehabilitation

Sunny Hill provides services for children who have sustained an acquired brain injury (ABI). An ABI is an injury that results in the disruption of the normal structure and function of the brain. The term ABI refers to a brain injury that has occurred after birth and does not include injuries to the brain that are congenital or the result of birth trauma. Both traumatic brain injuries (e.g. resulting from a fall or motor vehicle accident) and non-traumatic brain injuries (e.g. resulting from a stroke or meningitis) are seen at Sunny Hill.

Following acute medical care, Sunny Hill provides acute rehabilitation and assessment. While children referred must be medically stable, many are not yet fully conscious and function at a low-level state. Services are provided using an interdisciplinary team approach. Family support is provided and includes education and training about the child's injury and care.
