  • Treat children and youth for intensive inpatient and/or daypatient therapy
  • Provide child-specific education and training support for families and community care providers to:
    • help you and your child have a successful return home
    • enable you and/or your child, with the help of community providers, to care for yourselves independently and successfully at home and in the community
  • Transition you into the community:
    • connect you to community resources and supports
    • help integrate your child into school after a brain injury
  • Provide postoperative care (eg. gastrostomy tube, orthopedic) including teaching and therapy
  • Provide supportive care of medically complex and fragile children and/or those with high care needs
  • Provide respite care
Who Are We?

We are a team of nurses, doctors, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, recreation therapists, psychologists/neuropsychologists, dieticians, rehabilitation engineers and techs, social workers, pharmacists, and teachers who provide care to children with a range of developmental and physical disabilities. A physician referral is required to be admitted to our unit.

Sharing the care

We want you, the parent or caregiver, to be an active partner in all aspects of your child’s care. You have a right to the information you need to help you make good decisions and give the best possible care to your child. You have a right to be respected as the person who knows your child best.

It is important that parents and staff talk to each other each day about planning your child’s care. We do daily bedside rounds at 8:30 a.m. each weekday. This is a time for you and your child’s team to talk about your child’s progress and plan daily and weekly goals. It is also a great time to ask questions. How you would like to participate in daily bedside rounds is up to you. The program Service Coordinator will discuss this with you upon admission.

Who do I phone if I have questions about my child?

Nurse's station: 604-453-8311 (direct line)

You can phone the inpatient unit at any time and ask to speak to the nurse caring for your child. Your child will have a different nurse at each shift (every eight hours). If the phone is not answered, please leave a message. Your child’s nurse will call you back as soon as possible.

Parent Lounge

There is a parent lounge (Room S227) on the inpatient unit. It is often used by parents who are staying overnight with their babies, so it may not be available between 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m. There is a TV and VCR for parents to use in this lounge.

Parents can also use “Family Place” (Room S295) beside the Therapy Department.
