Inpatient Services
The Sunny Hill inpatient unit is a provincial tertiary resource that provides acute rehabilitation services for children and youth from birth to 19 years of age. An interdisciplinary team of nurses, doctors, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, child life and recreation therapists, neuropsychologists, nutritionists, social workers and teachers provide care to children with a range of developmental and physical disabilities.
The inpatient unit serves children and youth with acquired brain injuries or other diseases or conditions that require acute rehabilitation and transition planning to support their return to their home community. During acute rehabilitation, child-specific training and education is offered to families and community care providers. This training is vital to facilitate a successful return home.
Sharing the care
We would like parents to be active partners in all aspects of your child’s care. You have a right to the information you need to help you make good decisions and give the best possible care to your child. You have a right to be respected as the person who knows your child best.
It is important that parents and staff talk to each other each day about planning the child’s care. Our expectations of each other must be reasonable. Our staff members understand that it is not always possible for a family member to be at their child’s bedside. Families should not expect that the staff will be able to meet all their child’s needs immediately without delays. When a family member is not able to be with their child, the child may have to wait a little longer to be fed, bathed or comforted. This is not too different from a busy home where everyone’s needs can’t be met at once. As partners in care, it is important for parents and staff to speak to one another when things are not going well, or when we are not meeting each other’s expectations.
We recommend that a parent and the child’s nurse make a daily plan together. Plans should take into account the child’s therapies and other planned activities. Parents can do as much of the child’s care as is comfortable for them. This may change each day. When new skills have been learned, it is important for parents to continue to practice what they have learned with their child.

Who do I phone if I have questions about my child?
Nurse's station: 604-453-8311 (direct line)
You can phone the inpatient unit at any time and ask to speak to the nurse caring for your child. Your child will have a different nurse at each shift (every eight hours). If the phone is not answered, it means all the nurses are busy caring for patients. Please leave a message after you hear the recording. Your child’s nurse will call you back as soon as possible.
For more information, contact the Program Manager, Acute Rehab through the Sunny Hill switchboard at 604-453-8300.
