Cleft Palate Craniofacial Program

The Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Program is the provincial resource for about 2,500 children with cleft lip and/or palate or craniofacial birth defects in BC and the Yukon.

Children born with facial birth defects may experience communication problems (e.g., speech and language disorders, hearing loss), abnormal facial appearance and impaired facial function, impaired dental function, and psychosocial and quality of life issues due to their appearance and self-esteem. The specialised multidisciplinary team assist these children to achieve their maximum potential. They provide on-going assessment, treatment planning, case management and coordination, follow-up, and treatment intervention.

Since 1970, the program has aimed:
  • To provide functional and diagnostic assessments and long-term treatment plans and surgical treatment for children born with cleft lip and/or palate, craniofacial birth defects, velo-pharyngeal insufficiency and acquired facial anomalies from birth to adulthood.
  • To provide second opinions about managing speech & orthodontic issues.
