BC Children's Dentistry

The BC Children’s Hospital Dental Department delivers comprehensive, preventative and therapeutic oral health diagnosis, treatment and consultative expertise for infants, and medically compromised children and adolescents.

The dental operating room offers restorative and surgical treatments under general anesthesia to meet the oral health care needs of pediatric patients who require the unique tertiary and specialized surgical care that is only available at Children’s Hospital. This includes the delivery of minor oral surgery, oral/maxillofacial surgery, and emergency oral health care services.

The eligibility criteria for treatment in the dental operating room are as follows:

children, 48 months of age and under with severe caries, and
children under 17 years of age with a significantly compromising medical condition such as cancer, organ transplant, congenital heart disease, cleft lip and/or palate, craniofacial anomaly, physical disabilities, medically diagnosed behavior management issues such as developmental delay or autism.

Through affiliation with the University of British Columbia, the Dental Department also provides teaching opportunities to medical and dental students and to new graduate dentists in the General Practice and Pediatric Dental Residency Programs.
