Interpreter services

Interpreters

The Provincial Language Service provides both face-to-face and phone interpreting for families coming to Children’s whose English skills are limited or absent. We provide highly qualified and certified medical and community interpreters. All interpreters meet and follow the standards for professional health care interpreting.

Interpreter services are available to help you 24 hours a day, seven days a week. To book an interpreter, ask your health care provider to call.

Local calls: 604-675-4099
Long-distance toll-free calls: 1-877-BCTALKS (1-877-228-2557)

Remember that family and friends still have a role in interpreter-assisted appointments. It is the same role a family member or friend would play when both parties speak English – one of support.

Translations

Many of our pamphlets have been translated into Chinese, Punjabi, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Please ask your health care provider for more information. You can also find translated materials online at the Family Resource Library.

TTY machines

TTY machines are available for people who are hearing impaired. A fixed unit is located in the BC Women's Admitting and Assessment area and a portable unit is available through the main switchboard (Room E400A).
