BC Children's is part of the health care response for the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, including caring for COVID-19 positive patients and developing different COVID-related provincial guidelines for children. We are also, testing for COVID-19 at the collection site at the hospital and have transformed care delivery during the pandemic, increasing the use of virtual care and resuming patient care and research activities that were paused or reduced during the first wave of the pandemic in Spring 2020, as appropriate, including increasing the numbers of surgeries and procedures performed.
Dolly Khanna, nurse clinician for BC Children's orthopedic department and nurse for close to three decades, won a PHSA+ Award.
B.C. launched a
new mouth rinse and gargle sample collection for school-aged children, making testing for COVID-19 easier for parents and children. Provincial Lab Medicine Services, the Public Health Lab, BC Children's Hospital and BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) worked together to launch the program, which was the first of its kind in Canada.
Sunny Hill Health Centre at BC Children's Hospital, a new a state-of-the-art facility opened on August 30 to youth across B.C. who need specialized acute rehabilitation and developmental assessments. This was part of the third and final phase of the BC Children's and BC Women's Redevelopment Project.
A COVID-19 collection site was set up in March at BC Children’s Hospital to test health care workers. It expanded to also test children and pregnant women later in the spring.
