Influenza is a highly contagious virus that infects millions of Canadians and leads to approximately 3,500 deaths across the country each year. Preventing the spread of influenza is a shared responsibility and by getting your flu shot, you have the potential to save countless lives.

To better protect patients and their families from influenza, BC Children’s Hospital offers flu vaccines at no cost for children, family members, pregnant women and visitors beginning October 16. Both pediatric and adult flu vaccines are available.

As of December 1, 2017, all staff, volunteers and visitors to the hospital or other Provincial Health Services Authority sites must have had a flu shot or are required to wear a mask during flu season (December 1, 2017 until approximately March 2018). Masks will be available at nursing stations, outpatient reception desks and the main entrances of our facilities. This policy applies to all patient care facilities in BC.

Clinic Details
Date: Begins October 16
Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm
Location: BC Children’s Hospital Family Immunization Clinic, Ambulatory Care Centre: Main Level, Entrance 21

Children experience the highest rates of seasonal influenza (15-25 per cent) of any age group and are at highest risk of complications of influenza (especially those patients with chronic medical conditions). Since many “high risk” children pass through the ambulatory clinics of BC Children’s each day, this provides them with a convenient opportunity to receive influenza vaccine. Providing influenza vaccination to family members and visitors in the hospital also maximizes protection for high risk children.

Participate in BC Children’s flu social media contest
Get your flu shot at BC Children’s and win! Once you receive your immunization, post a photo of your “I was vaccinated” sticker to Twitter and tag @BCChildrensHosp using hashtag #fightflu. On December 15 at noon, BC Children’s will draw a name from all those who participated and the winner will receive a BC Children’s gift basket.

Canada’s first in-hospital Family Immunization Clinic to offer publicly funded immunizations
In January, BC Children’s Hospital Family Immunization Clinic, the first of its kind in Canada, will provide all publicly-funded immunizations at no cost to patients at BC Children’s and BC Women’s and their friends and family visiting the hospital.

The clinic will be open Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, and will operate through a combination of drop-in visits and pre-booked appointments that are scheduled with an immunization nurse or physician.

The clinic was made possible through the generosity of a $15 million donation by Save-On-Foods
