On April 7 staff, physicians and project partners at BC Children’s and BC Women’s Hospitals celebrated the many milestones achieved by the new Teck Acute Care Centre Redevelopment Project.

During the event MLA Sam Sullivan presented six-year-old Sammy Holmes with a ceremonial key to the new hospital, which he will hold on to until it opens its doors this fall.

In 2010, Sammy was born two-weeks premature with Down Syndrome at BC Women’s. He spent the first few days of his life in an incubator in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). One week after going home, he was rushed to the emergency department with congestive heart failure, followed by another week in the hospital; and at four months old, he had surgery at BC Children’s for a hole in his heart.

When the Teck Acute Care Centre opens patients like Sammy and his parents will have access to features like the new NICU and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), designed with family-centered care in mind. The new NICU and PICU include single-patient rooms that provide supportive environments for both short-stay patients and those that require longer-term stays or more complex care.
