One of the most common conditions our kidney doctors (nephrologists) see in patients is nephrotic syndrome, which causes different parts of the body to swell, particularly around the eyes followed by swelling of the feet, legs and belly. The syndrome is due to the loss of protein in urine and low blood protein levels.

Currently there are 175 children in BC living with nephrotic syndrome. To better support parents in caring for their children, nephrologists and the team at BC Children’s renal program created a handbook that outlines an overall approach for the diagnosis and management of the condition. This handbook was created with the help of families and children with nephrotic syndrome, as well as students, dietitians and physicians.

“This useful resource shares our approach to care in British Columbia and helps families and caregivers manage the condition in an informed, safe and effective way," said Dr. Douglas Matsell, head, division of nephrology, BC Children’s.

BC Children’s provides renal care to children and teenagers living with kidney disease. Our specialized team delivers a full range of care through our general nephrology clinic, chronic kidney disease clinic, multi-organ transplant clinic and other services and programs. Learn more about how our division of nephrology helps children living with kidney disease through evidence-based clinical care, research, education and advocacy.
