CHBC and GPAC Provincial Guideline: Asthma in Children – Diagnosis and Management (Oct 2015)

This provincial guideline is a collaboration between Child Health BC (CHBC) and the Guidelines and Protocol Advisory Committee (GPAC) outlines the diagnosis and management of asthma in children 1-18 years old.

Emergency/urgent care resources

This provincial guideline was developed by a multidisciplinary provincial working group with representation from the Regional Health Authorities and BC Children's Hospital. It provides guidance on the management of children 1-17 years old who are diagnosed with asthma or have been treated at least 2 previous times with a bronchodilator for wheezing, who present to the Emergency Department or Urgent Care Centre with wheezing or respiratory distress.

Asthma action plans

These action plans were developed as part of the CHBC and GPAC asthma guideline and provide a three zone (red/yellow/green) action plan for children and families. On the reverse side of the guideline, there is an area for families to fill in goals and triggers, as well as instructions on how to use the asthma devices suitable for that age group.

These action plans are available as fillable PDFs with dropdown menus of the medications or as printable PDFS with blank boxes for practitioners to fill in the medications by hand. They are available in three languages (English, Punjabi, Simplified Chinese). For information in other languages, please visit the University of Calgary website.
