Emergency Department

Service information

If your child is having a medical emergency, which includes difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, or a mental health crisis, call 9-1-1 immediately for an ambulance or visit your nearest emergency department.

If you are unsure whether to visit the emergency department with your child, visit the 'When to Visit the ED' tab.

Who is eligible

We provide emergency care to children and youth up to 16 years of age.

Anyone 17 years of age and older can visit their nearest adult emergency department for care.

Wait times

We treat the sickest patients first; staff will determine how quickly your child will be seen based on their symptoms. We ask families visiting our emergency department to be kind and respectful to staff.

Wait times estimates for our emergency department and others in Richmond, the North Shore and other Lower Mainland hospitals are available here:

Wait times for emergency departments

Note: The emergency department cannot reduce your wait time for pre-existing specialist referrals.

What to bring with you

If possible, please arrive at the emergency department prepared. Some items you may bring include:

  • your BC Services Card / personal health number (for temporary and permanent B.C. residents and Canadian citizens);
  • your child's medications or any medical records, if available;
  • a phone charger;
  • snacks and drinks;
  • other items to support and soothe your infant or child while you wait.

Who should come to the emergency department

One to two family members or caregivers are welcome to accompany each patient. This ensures space for others waiting, and allows staff to focus their attention on children who need care. To ensure the safety of others, please stay with your child at all times.

Directions, parking and food services

Our emergency department is located near entrance 55 - this is off West 28th Avenue, between Heather Street and Oak Street in Vancouver.

See the Children's and Women's wayfinding map (PDF).

Our directions and parking page has information, such as parking rates and transportation options.

See food options located at BC Children's Hospital. Note, service hours may vary over statutory holidays, evenings and weekends.

Other care options
It can be challenging to decide whether your child needs to visit the emergency department. If you are unsure,  visit our 'When to Visit the ED' tab, or find alternative options for further guidance below:

Free general health guidance via phone:  call 8-1-1 for free healthcare advice. This service is available 24/7, including translation options.

Free mental health guidance: 9-8-8 is a free support line, available via phone or text for parents, caregivers and others. This service is available 24/7, year-round. If your child’s safety is at immediate risk, call 9-1-1 immediately, or visit your nearest emergency department.

Family doctor or walk-in clinic: Families and caregivers may visit their family doctor, or a nearby walk-in clinic, if available in their community.

Urgent and primary care centre: Families can visit an urgent and primary care centre (UPCC), if available in their community. UPCCs offer medical attention within 12 to 24 hours, for conditions such as sprains, minor cuts or burns, and other non-emergency concerns.
