Outpatient appointments

Outpatient appointments are only available for patients with provider orders for:

  • Sweat test collections 
  • Oral glucose tolerance testing
  • Child Life Specialist-assisted collections
Usually your clinic will book lab appointments however if you are booking your own appointments or need to cancel/re-book, please call 604-875-2139 option 2.


Prepare for your visit

What to bring

  • BC Services Card (provincial health number)
  • Requisition
    • Requisition from your health care provider, approved by Ministry of Health (MoH)/Provincial Laboratory Medicine Services that includes the ordering practitioner's full name, contact information (including address) and MSP number. (No naturopath orders.)
    • Make sure the patient information is correct, including legal name, date of birth, BC Services Card number, and gender.  If there is an error, please contact your provider to correct it before proceeding to the laboratory.  
    • Make sure the requisition is signed and dated by the provider or designate (electronic signature is acceptable).
    • Check to see if there are any fasting tests. Your health care provider may specify the duration of fasting on the requisition. If not specified it should be 10-12 hours with no food or drink with the exception of water and medications. Please plan the visit accordingly.

Prepare your child

  • Child Life: certified child life specialists help to reduce stress and make visits to the laboratory a more positive experience for children. Visit the Child Life web page to find out more.
  • Pain management & comfort: When a child comes into the hospital laboratory, it may cause distress, pain and fear. This information will help you to prepare for a laboratory visit and support a child's pain at BC Children's Hospital.

Visit the Provincial Laboratory Medicine Services website for details about preparing for a test. You'll find instructions on collecting samples, including how to collect an infant urine bag.

Results

Your health care provider will receive your results and talk to you about any next steps.

If you would like to receive a copy of your laboratory results:

  • Children (under 16): To request information from your child's medical file, print the release of information form (PDF). 
    • Once complete, fax or mail the form to the hospital where you are making the request. Instructions and a contact list are included with the release of information form.
    • Please note: due to the volume of requests received, it may take four weeks or more to process release of information.
    • For privacy reasons, do not send personal medical information by email.
  • Adults (16 and older)MyCareCompass offers a fast and secure method for patients to receive their results electronically. MyCareCompass is a free service.
