Anesthetic Care Unit

The Anesthetic Care Unit provides preoperative preparation and postoperative care for children undergoing a surgery or procedure.

The unit is staffed by specially trained nurses, care aides and Child Life Specialists who will help assess and prepare your child before their surgery or procedure.

After the surgery or procedure specially trained nurses will monitor your child closely during the early phase of their recovery. Our nurses are skilled at assessing your child’s reactions on awakening to determine whether they need any additional medication or treatment. The nurses work under the direction of the anesthesiologist to ensure your child has a safe and comfortable recovery.

Seeing your child after their surgery or procedure

Your presence is important, and you will be called to be with your child as soon as possible. Two adults are allowed to be in with the child while they are waking up. Each individual patient room allows privacy for the patient and family during their time post procedure.

Your child's length of stay in the department will depend on the procedure that they had, if they are in pain and how long they take to wake up. The nurse is available to answer any questions and provide your discharge teaching before you and your child leave the department.
