Flexible scheduling
Nurses work 12-hour shifts from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., or 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. The unit offers self-scheduling, where nurses create their own schedules following unit guidelines and the collective agreement. Alternatively, nurses can opt for a master rotation.
Surgical nursing training
We offer many courses during orientation and on an ongoing basis. We provide staff with education opportunities specific to the patient population for whom they primarily care. Surgical inpatient staff have several learning opportunities to develop the required competencies for working in this dynamic environment.
Professional development
BC Children’s Hospital is committed to supporting ongoing learning through dedicated education days, interdisciplinary education including simulation, and a variety of workshop and conference opportunities.
We encourage and support all staff to enrol in ongoing courses through BC Children’s Hospital and PHSA, as workload permits. Additionally, e-learning modules are accessible through the hospital intranet for quick educational reviews.
