On February 26, we are moving from older systems and paper charts to an electronic health records system. This new system will help us improve the safety, quality and consistency of patient care in B.C.

As part of our new system, patients will have the option to self-identify as Indigenous. We will use these answers to ensure safer service for Indigenous patients. People who self-identify can also connect with our Indigenous Health Program and Indigenous Patient Navigators.

During registration, staff will ask all patients if they identify as Indigenous. Staff will not make assumptions about ancestry. You have the right not to answer. This will not affect the quality of the care you receive.

You can self-identify if you have Indigenous ancestry. You do not need proof. Your answer is voluntary and confidential. Your answer helps us connect patients with culturally relevant resources and supports through our Indigenous Health Program and Indigenous Patient Navigators.

The Indigenous Health Program provides health and support services to Indigenous patients and their families receiving care at BC Women's Hospital + Health Centre and BC Children's Hospital.

Indigenous Patient Navigators can:

  • Support you or advocate for you with health care providers
  • Attend medical appointments or meetings on site with you
  • Connect you with an Elder or cultural advisor for spiritual or emotional support
  • Organize traditional ceremonies

Learn more on our patient information sheet, or, find out about our Indigenous Health Program and the role of Indigenous Patient Navigators.

We gratefully acknowledge the privilege of being located within the unceded traditional and ancestral territories of the Tsleil-Waututh, Squamish, Stó:lo, and Musqueam Nations.
