Assistive Technology

Our team sees children with severe speech and writing disabilities.
Your team

Who are we?

Your team is made up of a group of people with different specialties that include speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, educators, and rehabilitation engineers.

What do we do?

We:
  • assess your child to see if he or she would be helped by assistive technology
  • work with you, your child, and your community professionals to plan the best solution for your child. The solution may include special electronic equipment
  • provide outreach services, meaning we go to your home community instead of you bringing your child to Sunny Hill
Difficulty speaking and writing can be due to disabilities such as cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury and autism, among others.

Your appointment

Appointments usually take place at the location that works best for you and your child; home, the child development centre, or school.  It is helpful if community team members such as your speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, infant development consultant, teacher, etc. can attend.

We'll confirm your appointment time and place with you and your child's community team members before we book the appointment.

If you live outside the lower mainland and are coming to Vancouver for other appointments or if your child's assessment includes equipment that is difficult to take to your community, we may book an appointment for you at Sunny Hill. If you come to Sunny Hill, please check in with the receptionist at the main entrance.

If your child uses any communication or assistive technology, or uses specialized seating, a wheelchair, or tray, please bring these items with you to the appointment.
