Femoral Head Resection

These protocols are for physiotherapy following a femoral head resection.

Phase 1: Post-op day 1 to 7

Goals: Pain management, equipment, early mobilization, discharge and transition to home

  • No restrictions in hip ROM; move within levels of comfort

  • Mobilize to wheelchair as tolerated
  • Use resting splint or pillow throughout the night for 3 months and use during the day when napping, floor/sitting activities
  • Family to learn and be comfortable with transfers
  • ROM to all joints within comfort - confirm with orthopedic team

Phase 2: Post-op day 11 to 6 weeks

Goals: Focus on ROM exercises at 6 week post-operative period.
  • Use resting splint or pillow throughout the night for 3 months and use during the day when napping, floor/sitting activities
  • ROM to all joints within level of comfort
