Metabolic Nutrition

The BC Metabolic Nutrition Program provides specialized metabolic formulas and low protein foods to children and adults with inborn errors of metabolism.
About

We provide the metabolic formulas and low protein foods you need to help manage your inborn error of metabolism or metabolic condition.

Metabolic formulas

Your physician and dietitian will let us know what specialty formula to give you. The formulas you need to manage your Inborn Error of Metabolism continue to be provided to BC residents free of charge.

Metabolic formula and amino acids are provided to you by the BC Metabolic Nutrition Program (BCMNP). Phone or email us when you need to order more formula or amino acids. The formula you have been prescribed is specially ordered for you. We need 4 weeks' notice to fill most formula orders.

Low protein foods

Your dietitian will talk to you if you need these special foods.

BCMNP is partnered with National Food Distribution Centre to provide low protein foods. All the low protein foods you wish to purchase with your subsidy now come directly to you from our approved vendor, National Food Distribution Centre. This includes a wide variety of cold ship and shelf stable low protein foods.

When you are ready to place your next food order, phone National Food. The phone number is 1-888-606-6676 ext. 225.  You will speak directly with Lyne. The order desk is open from 6am - 9am and 10am - 2pm (PST).

The order will be delivered right to your home. Dry or shelf stable foods should be received within one week.  Cold ship or frozen foods are delivered by freezer truck from Montreal and then courier to your door, you should receive cold foods within 4 weeks from when you placed the order.

The delivery method of cold ship foods has recently changed. More information from National Food Distribution Centre can be found by clicking here.

The availability of Low Protein Foods will change as new products become available and other products are discontinued by the manufacturer. If you have questions about which foods are available, phone National Food and speak with Lyne.  They have the most up to date information on which foods are available.

More information about National Food can be found here.

To provide this service, we will collect some personal information including your name and address and provide it to National Food Distribution Centre so they can create a personal profile and arrange for delivery.

We collect your personal information as authorized under section 26(c) of the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act ("FIPPA") to provide metabolic formulas and low protein foods to you. We collect your name, address, telephone number and personal health number. If you have questions or concerns about how your information is collected or used, you may contact:

Low Protein Foods

The safety and quality of the foods you receive is important to us and we are not satisfied if you receive foods that have thawed.  We tried sending the shipments by air to reduce the number of days it takes to reach you.  Unfortunately, this delivery method is too expensive to continue.

NFDC would like to keep the delivery costs as low as possible to ensure you can order the maximum amount of food within your subsidy amount.

As a solution to keep delivery costs down, we have changed the delivery method to sending cold ship deliveries using ground delivery with a frozen truck.  The challenge with this method is that we can only send orders every 2 weeks.  You should receive your order in 3 – 4 weeks.

What we ask of you:

  • Place your order 4 weeks before you need the food items
  • Place a larger order for cold ship foods if you have enough freezer storage space

Dry goods or shelf-stable foods will be continued to be delivered shortly after the order is received.  You should continue to receive these foods within 7 business days.

PKU Perspectives brand of low protein foods have experienced some supply challenges.  National Food was not able to order them for many months.  PKU Perspective brands are available again but in limited quantities to ensure all clients have access to the products they need.  You may order monthly and this will help National Food with the PKU Perspectives supply.

All clients receive a yearly $3000 subsidy amount with an additional $200 per year for delivery costs. On September 1, each year, all clients receive a credit of $3200. You will have until August 31, the following year, to use this amount.  Any funds  not spent prior to August 31 are not carried over to the next year.

Yes. It is more expensive to deliver cold ship foods because the coolers and ice packs add weight to the package. The package is usually rush shipped to shorten the amount of time so the foods stay cold or frozen.

Each client will receive an additional $200 per year to offset these extra delivery costs.

Yes. The cost to deliver your food order is included in the price of each food item.

You can order as often as you need to. There is a minimum dollar amount of $100 of cold ship foods per order if you are ordering cold ship foods.  Most people place a food order once a month or once every two months.

Most orders with dry or shelf stable foods will be delivered to you within one week after you order.

Cold ship foods are delivered by freezer truck from Montreal. This truck is scheduled for twice per month. A courier will deliver the cold ship foods to your home. This is anticipated to take 3 - 4 weeks from when you place an order.

Sometimes a product will not be in stock. National Food will send the rest of your order. On the bottom of your packing slip you will see a comment if an item has been backordered.  If this happens, you will have to order the item again on your next order. You will only be charged for items you receive.

If there is a problem with your order, you will phone National Food at 1-888-606-6676 ext. 225.  Lyne will answer your questions and help with the problem.

No. BCMNP does not stock or order any low protein foods.  You will need to phone National Food to place an order.  BCMNP will only stock and order metabolic formulas and amino acids.

We will only provide your name and address to National Food using a secure manner. This is to confirm with them you are a BCMNP client and your dietitian has recommended low protein foods for you.
