Orthopaedics

We produce a variety of materials to help orthopaedic professionals in their clinical practice.

Physiotherapy protocols

These physiotherapy protocols were developed to aid therapists through pre-and post- intervention planning for children with cerebral palsy and/or cerebral palsy like conditions undergoing orthopedic treatments for hip subluxation or dislocation. This information in not intended for families to implement independently. Families should review these protocols with their therapists.

They are intended to act only as a guide by outlining procedures and basic therapy principles. They are not intended to be used as a strict protocol and the treatment strategies provided are not exhaustive.

Therapy activities provided may not be appropriate for all children and their gross motor functional level. Therapy goals and interventions should be tailored to the individual child.

Progression to weight bearing, after a period of restriction, must be confirmed with the orthopedic team as the guidelines provided are estimates only. Weight bearing will be allowed based on bone healing and must be confirmed with x-ray findings. It is the responsibility of the treating therapist to confirm changes in weight bearing orders before progressing. Please contact the Orthopedic CP Clinic Physiotherapists or the individual Orthopedic surgeon’s office if you require information on a child’s current mobility orders.

Should you require more information on the information provided in these protocols, please contact one of our therapists (see Our team & contacts on the Orthopaedic Cerebral Palsy clinic page).
