Spinal Cord Referral

The Spinal Cord Clinic consists primarily of outpatient consultations. Virtual consultations are available to assist the care of BC children who are unable to travel to Vancouver for assessment and treatment.
Who should be referred?
Generally, we accept referrals from other physicians after a diagnosis of a spinal cord injury has been confirmed. The patient will be in need of several disciplines such as a urologist, orthopedic surgeon and /or neurosurgeon as well as specialized rehabilitation services.  Each referral is screened. Neuroimaging and a neurological assessment are generally required to evaluate the need for coming to the SCC.

How can my child be referred?
A letter of referral with supporting documentation of a spinal cord injury is required. This referral is generally made by a pediatrician, neurologist or neurosurgeon

It is important to remember that we do not provide care for chronic back pain, spine deformities or spina bifida occulta, as this clinic treats issues involving the spinal cord.
Please find the referral page for other spine conditions in the orthopaedic clinic here, and the main page for the orthopaedic spine clinic here.

Referrals form

Referrals process

1Complete the referral form

Complete the referral form (found above) and fax it to 604-875-2553 or email it to sccbookingclerk@cw.bc.ca

2Include tests

Include any previous relevant tests, reports and consultations with the referral.  Please do not send clinical photographs, as they will not come through clearly.

3Wait for an appointment

Once the referral is received, the clinic will triage it accordingly; and then call the patient about 1 month before to book the appointment.

All referrals are triaged – the current wait time for non-urgent appointments is around one to three months but many of our patients are seen much faster than that.

While awaiting an appointment, please refer to our resources page for suggestions on symptom management.
