Shapedown BC

The Shapedown BC program fosters healthy lifestyle changes with families that are learning about healthy eating and active living.

The Shapedown BC program provides a holistic approach to weight management issues for children, adolescents, and their families. There are no diets involved in the program

Our 10-week group program involves weekly educational sessions that cover the following topics: nutrition, parental limiting setting, screen time, sleep, physical activity, body image and self-esteem, family meals, and communication. All sessions are facilitated by a registered dietitian and a mental health specialist.

Families also take part in weekly family fun activities at the local YMCA (or local community recreation centre).

Children and families are eligible for the program if they meet the following criteria:

  1. Children/adolescents between 6-17 years of age
  2. Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 97th percentile, or a BMI between the 85th and 97th percentile with certain medical conditions present.

Both parents and children/adolescents must be prepared to make changes and attend on a regular basis.

How does Shapedown BC work?

1Get a physician referral.

A physician referral to Shapedown BC is required.

2Attend appointments.

In order to continue supporting children/teens and their families on their healthy lifestyle journey during the pandemic, we have made some modifications to our program delivery processes.

Until further notice, eligible referrals are booked for 3 appointments with the Shapedown BC team:

1.         Virtual Intake

2.         In-person Physical Exam

3.         Virtual Feedback

The first appointment is a virtual 4-hour comprehensive medical, psycho-social and lifestyle assessment with a physician, mental health specialist and registered dietitian.

The second appointment is a 30 minute in-person physical exam with a physician. Only one parent/caregiver can accompany the child/teen.

The third appointment is a virtual 1-hour feedback session to review the results of the assessment, establish family readiness, and determine capacity to attend a 10-week virtual group program.

The child/teen referred to the program, as well as parents/guardians are required to attend these appointments.

3Attend group.

The child/teen and their family are invited to attend the next virtual age-appropriate group program.

Group is 10 weeks long, and includes 2 commitments per week:

  1. One 90 minute virtual evening session (includes a 15-minute physical activity session for the children with a certified fitness instructor); and
  2. One 45 minute virtual Family Fun Activity session with our Exercise Leader from the YMCA or local community centre.
