Shapedown BC

The Shapedown BC program promotes healthy living for the entire family.

The Shapedown BC program is a family-centred healthy lifestyles program for children, teens and their families.

Our group-based 10-week program involves weekly educational and interactive sessions that cover the following topics: nutrition, parental limiting setting, screen time, sleep, physical activity, body image and self-esteem, family meals, and communication. All sessions are facilitated by a registered dietitian and a mental health specialist.

Families also take part in weekly family fun activities hosted by the local YMCA or local community recreation centre.

Children and families are eligible for the program if they meet the following criteria:

  1. Children/adolescents between 6-17 years of age
  2. Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 97th percentile, or a BMI between the 85th and 97th percentile with specific medical complications present.

Both parents and child/teen must be ready to make lifestyle-related changes and prepared to attend on a regular basis.

How does Shapedown BC work?

1Get a physician referral.

A physician referral to Shapedown BC is required.

2Attend appointments.

Eligible referrals are booked for 2 appointments with the Shapedown BC team:

1.         Intake Appointment (In-person)

2.         Follow-Up Appointment (Virtual or In-person)

The first appointment is a 4-hour comprehensive medical, psycho-social and lifestyle assessment with a physician, mental health specialist and registered dietitian.

The second appointment is a virtual or in-person 1-hour follow-up appointment to review the results of the assessment, establish family readiness, and determine capacity to attend a 10-week group-based healthy lifestyle program.

PLEASE NOTE: The child/teen referred to the program, as well as a parent/guardian are required to attend all of these appointments.

3Attend group.

The child/teen and their family are invited to attend the next age-appropriate group program. The program is offered in-person at the majority of our locations, with virtual programming offered at select sites.

The group program is a 10-week commitment, with 2 sessions each week:

  1. One 90-120 minute evening session (includes a 30-60-minute physical activity session for the children with an Activity Coach from the YMCA or local community centre; and
  2. One 45-60 minute Family Fun Activity session with our Activity Coach from the YMCA or local community centre.
